Using thick client, this spinner (bottom of image) appears in member list, no matter the channel. It does not appear in member list for 1:1 chats. It also does not appear in web client. How can I determine the cause?

Is the spinner consistently displayed, even between restarts of the client? If so, it's possible that you're encountering some kind of bug in the client itself. It looks like the list itself is loaded, but the spinner is just not going away. I would suggest checking the web client (https://hipchat.com/chat) to see if encounters the same issue or not.
