Is there a way to make special characters work with Hipchat mentions?

I work in an Icelandic based company and frequently users will have special characters such as é or ð or ö in their names.  These appear to not be recognised as input when trying to @mention someone.  Is there a setting we can enable somewhere to allow this or function, or an open defect we haven't found perhaps?
