How to use Hipchat on secured intranet environment ??

arpit doshi September 14, 2015

We are looking for using HipChat in integration with all Atlassian tool in our environment but we facing below 2 issues

  • We can't use free HipChat plugins with Atlassian tool's as it needs the application server to be exposed to internet which we can't do.
  • We can't use the HipChat server solution because Atlassian provided a OVA image and not the actual install software (exe or jar) which can directly be installed on our servers. It's not possible because we never know what is in their in OVA.

In such scenario, it is difficult to use HIPchat. Any solution ??

Hi Arpit,

The HipChat integrations for BTF versions of JIRA, Confluence and Stash are bundled inside the application and do not necessarily require internet accessibility if the HipChat Server can be found on the same local network. Obviously, for any Cloud tools (Atlassian OnDemand, Bitbucket, etc) these integrations require access to the Cloud servers via the internet.

As far as the OVA, HipChat Server currently only has the virtual machine image available (as well as an AMI for use in AWS). VirtualBox is free virtual machine software that can run in on your servers that dedicates resources to the HipChat Server instance. We choose to use the virtual machine platform because persistent chat is realtime and requires access to realtime resources, opposed to shared resources as often seen with standard server machines.

I hope this clarifies!

Cheers,
-David

Arpit,

You can run some of the addons on your own servers too.

See: http://botlab.hipch.at/, click Learn more, then Fork for source access. There are some Dockerfiles there too.
