How the F do I block Giphy Images in Hipchat?

I can't stand giphy images everywhere in HipChat it ruins the whole usefulness of Hipchat.

Is there anyway to block giphy images from my end? like ad-blocker

There is a setting under HipChat's "General" settings to "Hide gifs by default". Hope that helps!

That was already checked, still seeing the images

I have also updated to the latest HipChat 4.0.12 still "Hide .gif Images by default" does nothing

Unfortunately, the Giphy bot itself will have to be updated to display their images as cards instead of inline. As @Steven Behnke stated above, the sassy bot displays content (including gifs) as collapsible cards that respect the preferences. I'd suggest trying this bot out instead: https://blog.hipchat.com/2016/02/24/hipchat-bots-a-guide-for-the-humans/#sassy

tried that, still loads the images in hipchat...

I just realized that we're apparently using 'sassy bot', which includes a /giphy command. This is a version 1 bot.

This different bot seems to do things differently –

  • Images are loaded directly from giphy's servers
  • The card is collapsable
  • Selecting "hide gifs by default" in settings works fine
