Yeah we use Nagios to monitor HipChat.
We check that the page answers in reasonable time and that the virtual machine is up etc. it requires some configuration but should be easy if you are already monitoring with Nagios. We haven't installed any nagios alarms inside the virtual machine itself though as it's quite an black box.
