I see a person in my left nav called Unknown. There is a bubble with 14 messages over where the x would be to remove the user. I only see this user on desktop but mobile shows 14 unread messages. Any idea how to get rid of this?

It's possible that this unknown user was deactivated from the Hipchat instance, which left over these notifications. Could you please try clearing the Hipchat client cache? The following articles explain how to do so, for Windows and Mac:
