We are looking at using HipChat as a messaging service at our location. We have security concerns when it comes to links in the conversation. We are looking to prevent this from happening. Can this be done?
The only settings we find is a "Are link responses Enabled" option. When set to "No" it only disables link previews, but not the link itself. For example, if you paste an Youtube link to a HipChat room or conversation, the link will still be pasted but the video preview isn't displayed in the clients. This is no good. We want the ability to disable such links all together. Atlassian support says the feature to do this not available and to request an enhancement. But has someone figured out
another way - while we wait for development?
Hi Aubrey,
There are some security add-ons that help to identify bad links. For example: https://marketplace.atlassian.com/plugins/com.atlassian.hipchat.metacert.2 . It doesn't prevent users from pasting links but it 'marks' bad links if they are pasted.
What is your usecase, is there a particular reason why you would want to prevent users from pasting links all together?
Thanks for the feedback. While the plugin is something that we will investigate and perhaps implement. Your response just cements that the option we are asking for is not a feature in the product.
As for a usecase, we are looking to disable purely under the pretense of security. May be a weak case for security, however, it sets a tone and mind set for others to be security aware. Having the control over the option would be a welcome feature.
