Hipchat server and internal email

Why does email try to go out via the internet to get to my local email server? I want to use my internal email server with Hipchat.  Is that possible?

HipChat Server's default configuration tries to be as functional as possible and email notifications are an important part of how HipChat works.

Please browse to https://<your HipChat server>/server_admin/email to set the email relay server hostname and authentication to proxy email out to your users. You can also SSH in and type "hipchat email" to set the relay from the command line.

I should have mentioned I actually do have my internal email server set for the relay. BUT....  I didn't have an authentication user set. Once I added a user the email seems to work now!  Thanks for help!
