Hipchat: how to receive a notification when there is activity in a room?

We would like to receive (and ultimately control) notifications when there is activity in a room.  For instance, I'd like to be able to specify, for each room, whether I get notifications when anyone posts a new message – whether it is directed at me or not.  Currently, we are having to manually click on all the rooms to see if the conversations have been updated. Obviously, that's now how a chat room service should work.  The only time I get real notifications is when someone sends me a direct message.

You do have the ability to set per-room notifications. Please checkout Changing your notification settings for more information.
