Hipchat eats CPU and battery on Sierra

HipChat version:
macOS version: Sierra 10.12

"Energy impact" ranges between 30 and 100 averaging at 65.
Specifically, the subprocess "http://myserver.hipchat.com" uses the most energy.

CPU every 10 minutes or so just spikes to 99% and sits there for 2 minutes then drops back down to ~40%, which is still ludicrous for a chat application. Even typing into the HipChat client just slows down to a crawl.
Specifically, again, the subprocess "http://myserver.hipchat.com" uses the most cpu.
