Hipchat Server 2.2.9 upgrades to 2.4.0 production but says a problem occurred

Been using HipChat server (production channel) without issue version 2.2.9. Today updated to 2.4.0 production channel via web site and it never upgraded. I remoted in to my Windows Server 2012 R2 box and started VirtualBox and saw an error "chef" error so I followed the guidance at this link and it fixed the error and it seems the upgrade succeeded after I restored to the pre-upgrade snapshot, fixed the chef error, then upgraded again. Yet when I try to visit the HipChat web site it says there was an error, check back later. I've tried this process several times including the force upgrade and I cannot get my hipchat server instance to work now.  Any suggestions?

I reverted to my snapshot and am staying on 2.2.9 until I know the production channel update is valid.
