Hipchat API - notification cards

I am using cards in my notifications but cannot figure out what html tags are allowed in the format attribute of the description object. I can get <b> and <i> to work but I cannot get table tags to work. The documentation states what tags are allowed in the message object if your format is html, but it doesn't state what is allowed within the card description.

Does anyone know the list of supported tags within the card description object?

Only very basic HTML tags are allowed in the notification text. In order to create a properly formatted card, you need to include a separate card object as described in https://www.hipchat.com/docs/apiv2/method/send_room_notification. Note that you should continue to send a text/HTML message because this will be necessary for HipChat clients that do not understand cards (not all users will be updated with the latest clients). More information is available at https://developer.atlassian.com/hipchat/guide/sending-messages.
