I suspect that this issue is related to graphic card drivers, so please try the following workaround and let me know how it goes:
Update graphic card driver
* HipChat use latest QT framework which utilized graphic card to run smoothly. So if you are using onboard or external graphic card, I highly suggest you update to latest release driver because outdated driver sometimes doesn't fully support QT framework
Reinstall graphic card driver
* Use this option if the graphic card driver already on latest release.
* Suggest reinstalling your graphic if the client still freezes or UI bug after updating your graphic card driver because there's a high chance that the graphic card driver has a bad update or corrupted driver which causing HipChat client to freeze or crash
Applying the parameter to disable the use of your GPU with HipChat client
* Only apply this workaround after you've done updating and reinstalling your graphic card driver.
# Right-click the 'HipChat' shortcut
# Add "--disable-gpu" to the end of the 'Target' path
# Press OK and relaunch the application
