Having problems with HipChat XMPP integration

Greg Bell June 19, 2018

As of a few days ago our HipChat bot started having connection problems with XMPP.

We're using a Hubot installation with the standard Atlassian adapter (https://github.com/hipchat/hubot-hipchat). We haven't changed anything code-wise with the bot and the adapter seems pretty stable. We upgraded to the latest version of the adapter, but we still have the same problem.

About a third of the time we'll get ECONNREFUSED from HipChat when we start up the bot and the rest of the time it seems to work. But then when we try to send a message with robot.messageRoom() it will fail because the connection doesn't exist to send the message with.

So it seems like in all cases the connection doesn't get created even though there's not always an error message.

There's some other people having the same issue as you can see from this GitHub issue for the HipChat adapter: https://github.com/hipchat/hubot-hipchat/issues/307.

There seems to be a fix in the github repo that's unrelated to any HipChat-side changes. Don't know why it broke though. (shrug)
