I am looking for a way to embed a chat onto a public website. The chat would be view only from the site, so essentially allowing people on the site to watch the convo in realtime, like a liveblog. I would presumably have this in an iframe.
Has anyone done this?
Hi Brandon - HipChat isn't really designed to do what you're looking for here, as there's no built-in view-only embed of a single chat room. We have had people embed the guest-access client in their own websites before (via a simple iframe), but that provides both read and write access to a given room.
It's possible you could accomplish something close to what you're looking for via the HipChat API: https://www.hipchat.com/docs/apiv2/method/view_recent_room_history. You would need to be careful to not exceed the rate limits however, which could be an issue if you had a particularly active room. You can see instructions for getting started with the API at https://www.hipchat.com/docs/apiv2
