We're currently testing Hipchat for our enviornment. We currently have the max 10 users, but are also wanting to connect to Active Directory. If we setup LDAP and it pulls in all the users in the domain, will that mean we'll be getting charged for each user? Or is this only the case if we send the user an invite? Thanks for your help in advance!
Hi Matthew,
That's a good question. For HipChat Server & Data Center, any user that is sync'ed into HipChat will count against the license count, regardless if the user will log into HipChat Server/DC or not.
This means that if you have 10 users in your LDAP server and you sync LDAP with HipChat (and don't filter the results) then all 10 users will sync into HipChat thus filling up the HipChat Server/DC 10 user license.
In order to prevent this, we strongly recommend setting the 'user object filter' under the User Schema settings to trim down users that sync into HipChat, as detailed here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/hc/reduce-the-number-of-users-synchronised-from-ldap-to-hipchat-server-687218288.html
Please note that if you're pulling in users from JIRA or Crowd, there are no filtering options available (and thus all users are pulled in that exist in those directories).
Hope this helps!
Cheers,

Does that inlcude users that are Disabled in AD?
How does HipChat handle over subscribed users then? say you have 150 users in AD, 25 are disabled and you only have a 100 user license?
Will HipChat only allow 100 users to activly connect? Does it prevent ANY user from connecting?
Why can you not filter the users based on group membership? like in Confluence and Jira?
