Delete Account with no Access?

I brought on a friend who is a freelance developer to work on a side project for me. His previous project the employer created a HipChat account for him, and since that project ended, his account has been deactivated.

I'm now trying to give him access but I get an error which states:

"This email address is claimed by a user in a different HipChat group."

If he is unable to gain access to HipChat via the web, how can he delete his account instead of creating a new email account?

If the developer cannot access his old HipChat account to delete it or edit the email address, as described in How do I have one account be a member of multiple groups? then please contact Support so they can help, as on this question.

Thanks, Ann! We got it resolved, he reached out to his former project lead and had himself removed.
