I'm new to creating bots and hip chat, and I am trying to understand how I can add one to a single room (sadly it has to be for one room only)? Based on what reading it doesn't sound like this is supported (it's installed globally across all rooms)? Is there a workaround?
In your add-on descriptor, you can define if the app will install globally or for individual rooms. That will allow you to install things for single rooms!
If you're doing a full-blown bot like Hubot or Lita, those actually use user accounts to connect to HipChat. There wouldn't be a way to force those into one room only unless you were managing the permissions for each room. Lita for example will join whatever rooms you invite it to by default, although you might configure the bot to only join one specific room and ignore invitations.
Otherwise if you're just pushing notifications to a room (for example from an alerting system), you can also just generate per-room notification tokens.
P.S. just a reminder that HipChat Cloud is retiring this coming February - so hopefully you are doing this all in HipChat Server / Data Center!
