This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Use HipChat and Confluence together
I'm using the full https:// URL for our HipChat server.
I've imported the SSL Cert for HipChat into the JRE running confluence. Do I also need to whitelist the hipchat URL? I tried this and it showed it could connect (both incoming and outgoing), however after doing this too, the HipChat integration simply says: We couldn't reach your server
To know that Confluence can reach the server it does a basic ping to an open url of HipChat.
So if it cannot reach that url, it means that for some reason there is some security in the middle blocking Confluence to reach HipChat.
As far as I remember the url that it is trying to reach is https://<HipChat server url/v2/capabilities
You should check that Confluence can reach that url, there must be something blocking that...
I can ping from Confluence out to the HipChat server just fine. Our group only "owns" the confluence side of things and another group within this company owns the HipChat side.
When I turn up logging in confluence on the attempt to connect to HipChat I see things like:
catalina.out:2016-01-26 06:41:09,040 DEBUG [http-nio-8443-exec-24] [atlassian.seraph.filter.BaseLoginFilter] doFilter doFilter : ____ Attempting login for : '/rest/hipchat/integration/latest/installation/ping'
So I try appending that context to the server in a browser and it gives me: The page xxxxx does not exist. You may have clicked an old link or mistyped the URL.
Similar issues with things like:
catalina.out:2016-01-26 06:41:08,999 DEBUG [http-nio-8443-exec-21] [atlassian.seraph.filter.BaseLoginFilter] doFilter doFilter : ____ Attempting login for : '/rest/hipchat/integration/1.0/rooms?key=&_=1453815668938'
catalina.out:2016-
Then after that I get:
catalina.out:2016-01-26 06:41:09,224 WARN [http-nio-8443-exec-24] [plugins.hipchat.rest.HipChatLinkResource] log Resource error - 403: Forbidden Resource error - 403: Forbidden

Can you successfully ping HipChat Server from Confluence box and vise versa? If you have firewall in place and the communication between the two servers are limited/restricted then you may need to whitelist the server. JIRA logs would also have more clues on what's going on here.
