When you use a browser to connect to HipChat, Hipchat will looks at the Browser User-Agent information, to determine on which device you are.
If the Browser User Agent references an mobile device, like an IPad, you will be prompted to download the app.

A possible workaround is to install an extention on your browser, or use another browser, which allows you to set the user-agent to that of a desktop.
(A browser that allows to change the user-agent is 'Desktop Browser')
