While not formally supported... 
HipChat's clients are now tunneling XMPP over BOSH, so they're effectively web based. If you're not using third party XMPP clients on TCP ports 5222, 5223, then you can pass HTTPS flow through reverse proxies.
Note that HipChat Server will redirect 80 to 443 so you'll have to forward to the encrypted port.
