"Timed out while trying to connect" appears when log in HipChat on Mac client

Hisamitsu Koga July 21, 2015

"Timed out while trying to connect" appears when log in HipChat on Mac client, so can't log in HipChat.

In case via Web, can connect and log in HipChat though. What / how can we check and set to fix this issue?

Hi David,

The issue was resolved now at the user side. Port 5223 was blocked. After opening port 5223,

the user ca log in HipChat on Mac app. One question. The user was able to log in HipChat on Mac app before.

Maybe several months ago, but not remembered exactly though. Accoring to him, port 5222 was used before,

but now port 5223 is used. Was it changed from 5222 to 5223? If yes, when?

Hi again, The change was made in the Mac app v3.3. The current production Windows and Linux apps still use port 5222 to connect. For future reference, log locations for the Mac app can be found at ~/Library/Logs/HipChat Cheers, -David

Hi Hisamitsu,

It sounds like port 5223 on the local network may be blocked, as that is the port used to connect to the HipChat Server with the Mac app. The web app uses 443 (https) to connect. So it sounds like your account is active, just need to check the local firewall/proxy.

If you continue to have a problem, then please reach out to support@hipchat.com with your current logs and we can help!

Cheers,
-David
