Sourcetree won't let me connect to my github account

Stephen V April 6, 2021

This is a fresh install of Sourcetree v3.4.4 on a brand new machine.  I setup bitbucket access already and have connected to my bitbucket repos through it and cloned a repo down.  I attempted to add a hosting account for Github using Basic authentication  and HTTPS preferred protocol with my Github username and password, copy and pasted from my password manager that I verified by logging into github.com and all I get is an "Authentication failed" message "Failed to check login for user [<username here>] Requires authentication.  I attempted clearing out windows credentials manager records for github and still had the same problem.  Seems to be a bug with Sourcetree?  Is there a workaround?

Hi Stephen,

I am going thru the same issue right now, I have not found a solution yet.

I just found this post "Can't link SourceTree to GitHub account" ( https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Sourcetree-questions/Can-t-link-SourceTree-to-GitHub-account/qaq-p/1570763 ).

Among its comments, it refers to a GitHub post, https://github.blog/2020-12-15-token-authentication-requirements-for-git-operations/

I have not tested any solution that the post mentions yet.

If you try any of the solutions, please let me know.

Best Regards,

JB
