Hi there community members,

My name is Alyssa, and I work on the product marketing team here at Atlassian. My team is curious to understand why our Jira Service Desk customers decide to move from our Server to Data Center offering (or why they decide not to). We want to learn what the decision-making process was like for you and your team. Here are the types of questions I’m hoping to answer:

  • Why did your team choose Data Center?

  • Who was involved in the decision? Which teams and individuals?

  • What factors were most and least important in your decision?

  • What information and resources were helpful in making your decision? What information and resources were missing that you wish you had been able to use?

  • What is the upgrading experience like?

If you were involved in the process, I’d love to set up a time to chat and learn more. Just leave a comment below and I’ll reach out to you directly to coordinate. And, if you’re not free to chat but have thoughts on the questions above, please feel free to share as comments below.

Thanks for your help,

Alyssa

P.S. We’re offering vouchers to the Atlassian Swag Store to thank you for your help :)

Alyssa,

My responses to your questions are below.  If you would like to chat more about this lets set up a time to discuss.

Why did your team choose Data Center?

  • Who was involved in the decision? Which teams and individuals?
    • There was a team involved in the decision including the customer, technical leads, program management and super users.
  • What factors were most and least important in your decision?
    • Scalability was one of the driving factors for our decision.  We wanted to be able to have higher up time and hot spares in a separate datacenter with one web front end.  Least important to us was cost.  It did not matter how much more it cost once the customer understood the higher uptime possibilities.
  • What information and resources were helpful in making your decision? What information and resources were missing that you wish you had been able to use?
    • Our technical leads did a ton of research on Atlassian's website to gather as much good and bad info as possible.  We had also reached out to Atlassian support to answer questions and were pleased with the responsiveness of the Atlassian folks.
  • What is the upgrading experience like?
    • When we first went to Datacenter it was painful b/c we went from Jira 6 to Jira 7 so that complicated things.  It was a good test for our team and we learned a ton.  We have upgraded a couple times since then and it has been much simpler.

We haven't yet made the move.

But we're starting to hit some performance challenges with jira and I would definitely like to make that transition.

Right now, the main reason is to manage costs. But I do think in the near future, the benefits will justify that cost increase.

Hi @Peter-Dave Sheehan , Thanks for your comment! Performance is one of the main reasons we see customers choosing Data Center. I'd be curious to hear which other Data Center features and benefits (existing or not-existing-yet) you think would help justify the higher price. Any chance you'd be up for a chat to share more? No pressure at all - I know the holidays can be an especially busy time :)

We are in the process of preparing to make the move.  I have to get funding secured to do so. Our instance has become very large and core to all work done at our institution.  We are continually onboarding new departments and need high availability.   while outages our rare on our server instance when they hit the phones blow up. I am happy to discuss.
