unable to add new calendar, all buttons are grayed

finally, it was a plugin activation. The plugin was here but not activated. It is a bit disturbing to have a menu entry in the sidebar to access calendar configuration even if plugin is not activated.

Could you please raise a support ticket (support.atlassian.com) so we can further investigate what is happening? Perhaps a restart might be necessary.
