is there any way from the zipfile of the backup to know which version of confluence the backup is from ?
I did some searching greps but couldn't find the version string i was expecting inside it anywhere.
Yes, there's a way! You can get this data by unzipping the backup file, look for exportDescriptor.properties, open it and check for the buildNumber. buildNumber indicates the version of Confluence. You can check Confluence version against the build number by referring to this page: https://developer.atlassian.com/display/CONFDEV/Confluence+Build+Information
