That sounds like a need that might be better met by Jira since Jira issues are automatically created with a unique issue key and you can configure workflow statuses to track progress.

You could then display Jira issues on a Confluence page using the Jira macro in order to see the current status of the tasks without having to go into Jira.

You can use the script runner plugin for confluence their you can write script to generate tracking number automatically
