Based on the error, possibly:

  1. Multiple copies of Applinks and/or plugin JARs are present in your installation.
  2. A corrupt plugin JAR (or more than one) and/or corrupt cache exist in the installation.
  3. An unsupported version of Java has been installed.

Try to check on these:

  1. Navigate to bundled plugins file e.g. C:\Confluence\WEB-INF\atlassian-bundled-plugins to check in case there are multiple copies of Applinks/plugin JARs
  2. Delete the following plugin cache and restart Confluence:
    • <confluence-home>/bundled-plugins
    • <confluence-home>/plugin-cache
    • <confluence-home>/plugins-osgi-cache
    • <confluence-home>/plugins-temp
  3. Confluence 5 should be pointing to JRE 1.7.0

Current version indicates 5.1.1, it seems like the previous admin attempted and upgrade because the both 5.1.1 and 4.2.1 installation files are on the machine.

Also running JIRA 4.3.2 on the same machine and database

What version of confluence? Did this happen after you tried upgrading your instance?
