We were using the Navigation customization to organize Pages and subpages nicely for a forum like organization. Created based on a template that recursively create pages that can create more subpages.

Thanks. Sorry to be more precise the Documentation theme gave us an ability to customize the Left Navigation bar using confluence Wiki Markup in the "configure theme" feature. We then can override the default of just seeing just the Page Tree in the Left side bar. So in there we could design what I have in the description above using something like the following
{section:border = true} {column:width=96%} *{color:DeepSkyBlue} Go to Main Topic Page: [+HOME+|https://our confluence site/display/QCF/Home]{color}* {column} {section} {section:border = true} {column:width=2%} {column} {column:width=96%} {panel:title=Forum|borderStyle=solid|borderColor=DeepSkyBlue|titleBGColor=LightSkyBlue|titleColor=Black|bgColor=GhostWhite} {pagetree:root=Home|sort=natural|excerpt=true|reverse=false|startDepth=3|expandCollapseAll=true|searchBox=true} {panel} {column} {column:width=2%} {column} {section}
Your description leaves a lot to the imagination, but Atlassian added the ability to customize the sidebar a few months ago. I think your use-case should be satisfied.
