Why do I get this message: Error rendering macro 'live-template' : null

1. I created a global template - it contains only a live template macro.

2. I created another global template it contains 4 text fields. (fields that will be used for a company glossary)

The live template in 1 above refers to the global template in 2.

When I preview I get the Error rendering macro 'live-template' : null message

I am trying to get a glossary that employees can use for company specific terms. A user will open the template and fill out the 4 text fields and publish. The template is live such that a change to the design ie an additional text field may be added in the future will then percolate down through all of the glossary entries.
