Hi @peter Smith and welcome to the Community.
I can tell you why I use Confluence for product documentation.
- easy to manage
- great learning curve for both the users and the admins
- very intuitive
- page edit history (reversible, comparable, etc.)
- WYSIWYG text and structure editor
- pure and simple text editor with a lot of content tools (macros)
- fast and reliable
- great user and permission management
- seamless and in-depth Jira integration
- APPS. To me, Confluence is both a tool and a platform which can be greatly expanded by apps. It's like a smartphone. There is an app for that.
- SAML SSO support
I had an intern on my team to migrate 500 pages using crude copy/paste method from one doc site to Confluence. Not a tech writer but a budding UX/UI student, he never used Confluence before yet he was able to use make and execute complex content decisions almost as a seasoned pro.
