What is the hierarchy of documents ??? in confluence- boards, pages, comments et al which is the top and where do sub-sections fit in below that and interact with one another
Hi @Clive Whitton, welcome to the community.
Spaces at the top of the hierarchy. Spaces contain content like pages and blog posts, which can have sub-pages.
Comments are attached to the content.
Much appreciated!

Hi @Clive Whitton and welcome to the Community.
Hierarchy is exactly that - organization of elements to express the following
Confluence displays, in the left navigation pane, shortcuts to specific tools (settings, automation), then there's the Content section for your pages, whiteboards, databases, and the Apps section (apps extend functionality of Confluence - think apps on a smartphone). App section typically provides a shortcut to the app's setup/configuration page or it's actual UI, depending what the app does.
It's really up to you how you organize your content - you can easily drag and drop individual pages around to create parent/child pages and thus expressing relationship among them as you see fit.
The Content section is really pliable.
