already tried a reindex?
we had problems showing avatars cuz of corrupted indexs:
https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/how-to-rebuild-the-content-indexes-from-scratch-110035351.html
The reindex succeed but did not help on
avatars. JIRA is the user server based on internal directory.

We don't have got AD or LDAP, in JIRA we upload the user.
