We have to convert our word doc into online help using confluence wiki (global access, users will click the link on our page, then they will be redirected to wiki page. we are planning it to be context sensitive), how should we plan step by step to avoid any pitfall?

There are two pitfalls:

1. Layout. Importing Word docs is about 80% successful; some tweaking will likely be necessary to get the look you want.
2. Access. You will need to give anonymous users at least global "use" access, and space (and possibly page) level "read" access.
