We have Confluence hosted and would like to move to Confluence OnDemand later this year. Is there a way to move our data over?

Lars Damkjaer July 25, 2012

We have Confluence hosted and would like to move to Confluence OnDemand later this year. Is there a way to move our data over? Our hosted instance is using an Oracle DB but we also have daily xml backups. Can we use one of these xml backs for importing into Ondemand? In an earlier answer to almost the same question it says that you (Atlassian) can provide a backup for the hosted version but i guess that is wrong since you do not have access to our system. So - can we use the xml backup and restore it into ondemand or is there another way?

Best regards - Lars

Hi Lars,

You can indeed import your Confluence data into OnDemand, although it needs to be exported/imported in XML format and Space by Space rather than as one Full Site backup like the ones you are currently taking as daily backups. You can read about how to export your data in XML format, Space by Space, in this document: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Exporting+Confluence+Pages+and+Spaces+to+XML

However, one challenge you may face is that importing Spaces is only possible when they have come from the same 'Major Version' of Confluence. For example, a Space exported from v4.1 can be imported into any v4.1.x instance as '4.1' is the Major Version but it couldn't be imported into v4.2.x as they are not the same Major Version. Therefore you will need to ensure that the instance you are exporting the Spaces from is the same Major Version as the one that OnDemand is running on. You can check the current application versions for OnDemand in this document: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AOD/Atlassian+OnDemand+Application+Versions

In the event that your local instance is running a different Major Version, you will first need to upgrade it to the same Major Version as your OnDemand instance is running on. You can read about the process of upgrading Confluence in this document on the subject: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Upgrading+Confluence

Finally, once your instances are running the same Major Version, you can follow these instructions for importing your Spaces into the OnDemand environment: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/AOD/Importing+wiki+data

All the best,
John
