Users logging into Confluence are being directed to a "Not permitted" screen and cannot navigate

james.chaplin January 7, 2020

Hi there,

We have external users logging into our Confluence platform and every time they log in, they do not see the space we have created for them (all users are added to the correct group). Instead, straight after logging in, they are directed to a page which reads, "Not permitted. You are not permitted to perform this operation." Above the not permitted message, it's looking like it's trying to take them to "Administration / Users."

If anyone has any ideas as to why they are being taken to this page as appose to the space we created for them, and why they have no ability to navigate around Confluence then that would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi James,

in the Confluence administration at Further Configuration, you define a Site Homepage. All users that log in will be taken to this page.
If they have no access to this page, it results in the error you are seeing.

This setting can be overruled by a setting on the user profile. Each user can set his or her own site homepage in the user profile settings.

AFAIK, you cannot

  • set the site homepage of other users (as an admin). They'll have to do this by themselves.
  • set the site homepage per user group.

Some suggestions (if you are having the problem as described above):

  • Change the global site homepage to a page all users can access. This can be the Confluence dashboard, or a (new) dedicated "landing" space.
  • Log in with the credentials of every external user and set their personal site homepage (tedious). Or tell them to set the personal site homepage themselves.

Cheers,
Kirstin
