User suggestion list showing old names after AD change

We recently introduced a new Windows domain. All the users can log in fine with their new credentials.

However, the user suggestions list now shows both the user names from the old domain and the new domain.

(The old domain has been removed from the User Directories sync.)

How can we stop the old names from displaying in the user suggestion list? This was a totally new domain, not a migration.

Have you performed a system re-index after removing the old user directory?

(We changed domains about a week ago. I have tried a manual rebuild of the index but it made no difference.)
