Space-wide storing of data without Active Objects

Hi,

I want to store some string based data in a space. The data is read and written by macros used with different page. Active Objects would be one option but is there also something like properties for a space (like for pages). If yes, how much data can be stored in such properties and how is concurrent r/w access handled?

(I think the Metadata plugin stores space metadata in such a way). Note that I want to access the data through the Java API.

Thanks!
