Even the page history seems to be showing only broken images. This can't be the case.
How can we recover these images? Or at least see what they were?

Please Clear browser cache, then refresh the page. Or access the confluence from another browser and check.
Google Chrome : Clear cache and cookies
Firefox : How to clear the Firefox cache
Edge : More options > Settings > Clear browsing data : Choose what to clear > Cached data and file > Clear
Internet Explorer : Tools > Safety > Delete Browsing History > Temporary Internet files and website files > Delete
Safari : Develop > Empty Caches

Not a cache issue... tried this... it's not just me... nobody is able to see them.
