Hi, I think this is a dumb question.

I'm assuming that I can't set up emailing from my local test instance to test out notifications etc.

I use Google Apps and I have tried the options on here http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=176600 but when trying to send a test email, the port 587 produced an error "Must issue a STARTTLS command first" the port 465 just did nothing (seemed to hang).

I don't think I can use the port 25 option with the SPF record as I don't have a static IP address (and work from many locations).

So, am I right in thinking this is just not possible?

Perhaps this article might help, though it's specific to jira https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA042/Using+Gmail+as+a+JIRA+Mail+Server

Oh cool, that looks like it will definitely help. But now I will have to work out how to do OpenSSL on the mac.
