Link to network drive on windows explorer

Dietmar Oehlert December 11, 2016
I'm trying to setup a link from confluence to my mapped network drive:
J:\DE\ITO\ABT_IT-Operations\SAP-Basis\04_Jobsteuerung_Allgemein\01 Job Neuanträge
[file://///J:/DE/ITO/ABT_IT-Operations/SAP-Basis/04_Jobsteuerung_Allgemein/01 Job Neuanträge]
The error i get is: Page not found or i'm missing the rights to open it.
Both can't be the reason, we're running version 5.10.8.
Any ideas?

Hi Dietmar,

That error message is a default, based on the fact that Confluence can't connect to the location you're providing.  The reason it can't connect will nominally be either that the location doesn't exist OR you don't have permissions to access it, so your browser can't see it.

However, this is a bit misleading.  The reason you can't connect is that your browser won't connect from a remote web page to a networked drive for security reasons.  See Atlassian's explanation here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/confkb/cannot-link-to-local-files-from-within-confluence-216958257.html

You've got some options to make it work though.  The following questions deal with the same issue:

https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/15277528/how-can-i-link-to-folders-on-company-shared-drive

https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/21205

And there is also the Infinidex add-on which allows you to connect to network drives and search across them from Confluence (it's a paid add-on; there might be a free alternative on the marketplace).

 Hope that helps.
