I've written a macro plugin which produces a report based on searching for labels; this works fine in the SDK environment. Having deployed it to our server, it returns no results.

Investigation shows that label searching is apparently not working at all on this installation, e.g. putting labelText:somelabel into the search box gives no results even though there are pages with that label. Going to Browse -> labels shows the label 'somelabel' but clicking on it gets a response that no pages are using it.

I have tried flushing the cache and rebuilding the search index. Normal text search works OK.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be?

May be yoru index got corrupted and it is not getting updated anymore. I suggest you to rebuild your index from scratch:

  1. Shut down your Confluence server.
  2. Make a backup of your <confluence-home>/index/plugin directory if it exists. This is where the Usage Tracking plugin stores it's index for the usage statistics and it cannot be rebuilt.
  3. Remove the <confluence-home>/index directory.
  4. If in step 2, you have the <confluence-home>/index/plugin directory, create the <confluence-home>/index directory and copy in the backup of <confluence-home>/index/plugin directory made in step 2.
  5. Restart server.
  6. Now perform the manual re-indexing of your site to build a brand new index from scratch.

I've just realised that it's specific to our space. It works OK in the demonstration space. So what could it be about our space that is causing this?
