Is there a way to to read an external web page as a plain-text, and extract some of the contents?

I want to have my wiki page be able to display the version information that is in the footer of serveral external web pages I support.

I was looking at:
http://www.xul.fr/ajax/responseHTML-attribute.php
specifically: http://www.xul.fr/ajax/responseHTML.txt

Is there an example of how to implement such a thing on a confluence page?

Is there an easier/better way?

Let me give you my 5cents here, in accordance with the 'same-origin policy' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-origin_policy) a script from one site is not able to access data on a second web page.
