We have recently upgraded to Confluence 4.2.
It has added a 'like' feature.
Is it possible to disable this feature?

Yep - just disable the Like Plugin from the plugin management interface (see https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Likes+and+Popular+Content#LikesandPopularContent-Disablingthelikefeature)
