EDIT: I am also looking for anecdotal stories if something goes wonky (technical term, right?). 

We have an on-prem confluence instance. We would like to upgrade to the latest version.  I would love to hear from anyone with experiences and advice as to how to proceed. 

Stories, links to docs, anything that would be helpful as I plan a path ahead.

Everything you need can be found here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/upgrading-confluence-4578.html  This documentation will walk you through all the steps you need to upgrade and items you should consider.  

Remember to always back everything up before you upgrade.  If possible create a clone of the application and infrastructure (VM) and perform the upgrade on that to validate your process before doing it in production.

Thanks, Brant. We usually do a cold snapshot of the VM prior to upgrading.
