How to upgrade plugins on confluence?

I have a specific question on how to upgrade plugins during confluence upgrade.

Should i upgrade the plugins after confluence is upgraded (i.e. allow the plugins to throw errors in the logsduring the upgrade)

OR

i shut down confluence old version, manually replace the plugins to newer version and then perform the upgrade?

What is the right approach?

You can firstly upgrade confluence and then upgrade plugin.
