How to make Confluence desktop site default for mobile

We have a Confluence documentation site, and we would like the default mobile view to be the desktop site. Is that possible?

I tried just disabling the Confluence Mobile Plugin, but then on a mobile device the site just displays a lot of gobbledygook characters.

I realize I can install a plugin for this, but it seems like I should be able to use the existing desktop site for mobile as well without using a plugin.

Hello Rand, can you provide additional information on the "gobbledygook characters"? A screenshot could help. :)
