How to evaluate a user macro body with a template variable in it

I created a simple page expiration User Macro and am trying to configure the expiration date using a template variable in the macro body.

I can get an example macro (colored name) working in a template with name as a template variable passed in the body (instead of the param in the example), but when I attempt to do anything more complicated, I get the dreaded can't render... error.

It seems I have to be able to check ($body) being empty to keep it from erroring in the template, but am not sure what to test for. Confluence use to support hasbody() but that has been deprecated.
