How can I easily migrate Confluence Data to another Confluence System (export/import) ?

Ralf Marg March 2, 2016

Want to move my Confluence data from customer system to my own. Could not find an easy way to do it like exporting XML and importing the same into the other system.

How does this work ?

Do a XML backup of Confluence and then import it into your instance as described in the docs https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/site-backup-and-restore-163578.html

https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/manually-backing-up-the-site-152405.html

If you've got some existing data into your Confluence instance than this is not so simple especially if there are a lot of spaces.

  1. Create separate backup for each confluence space on the customer instance
  2. Import each space backup into your instance

The problems you might face are :

  1. Broken links - if you have web links that point to confluence pages they need to be manually fixed or you need to do a complex db update
  2. Links to JIRA issues (if Confluence is linked with JIRA)
  3. Space shortcuts will not be migrated
  4. Custom space avatars - the space avatars are not migrated
  5. User Management - if the user base is different you might have incorrect page history and user mentions inside the restored pages
  6. Plugin data - if you have a plugin like Team Calendars - the data will not be migrated and you need to move it via SQL, but this is really complex if you have never done it before
  7. Others...
