Having worked this way with GitHub I expected to be able to do the same here and am having a hard time figuring out how to do this.
I want to be able to clone my Confluence contents like a git repository to my local machine and use local text editing to make changes to my documentation then push those changes back up via git.
This is not possible for Confluence.
I recommend reporting this to the Confluence team as a suggestion, you can do that here: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONF.
I use Confluence a lot, and I'm familiar with Git, and I agree that this would be an awesome way to work with a wiki.
Maybe a static site generator is the kind of experience you're looking for?
